When it comes to Transylvania the first thing that crosses somebody’s mind is bloodthirsty vampires, howling wolves and haunted castles. But apart from being the land of myths and legends, Transylvania region is so much more! This land is famous for its picture perfect landscapes and traditional stone houses in idyllic villages.
It was during one of our escapes when we decided that it was a good opportunity to explore the dramatic mountain scenery of this region and its cliff-top castles. Being totally indecisive about how to handle our limited time we had to opt between Bran (Dracula’s) castle and Peles castle. After a quick search and the recommendations of the local people we finally decided that Peles castle was the best option. Needless to say it was a decision we didn’t regret as Peles castle is the most exciting and beautiful Transylvanian castle in Romania and one of the most beautiful castles in Europe!
It is situated in a scenic spot in the Carpathian mountains on an existing medieval route linking Transylvania and Wallachia. If hiking is your hobby then you should experience this beautiful and rewarding trail that leads directly to the castle itself.
On your way to the castle and while you admire the beautiful scenery around, take a break and enjoy a coffee or a delicious Romanian dish in the traditional cafe restaurant you will find nearby. If the weather is good, sit in the terrace where you can have a great view of Peles castle lying right in front of you.
Peles castle is located at the end of a beautiful forest at the foot of the Bucegi Mountains in the picturesque town of Sinaia. It is considered a masterpiece of German new-Renaissance architecture, it was commissioned by King Carol I in 1873 and completed in 1883. The castle served as the summer residence of the royal family until 1947. Peles Castle was the first European castle entirely lit by electrical current. The complex is northwest of the town of Sinaia, which is 60 kilometres (37 mi) from Brasov and 135 kilometres (84 mi) from Bucharest.
Don’t miss the opportunity to pay a visit to one of the most beautiful castles in Europe!
