Seoul Lantern Festival: a not-to-miss experience!

Art, lights, music, people, an artificial stream and a lantern festival compose an image hard to forget from our experience in vibrant Seoul! Last year, when we arrived late on a Thursday night in Seoul, South Korea, we decided to have a walk downtown to see the city at night and feel the local vibes. Cheonggyecheon is the artificial stream that passes through the city and is a hotspot for locals and tourists creating a nice atmosphere (Eager to visit Seoul? See which neighborhood you should stay in here).

We decided to head towards the stream without knowing that each November the stream is being lit by beautiful handcrafted lanterns which are part of the annual Seoul Lantern Festival!

Unique creations embellish the stream

Robots, cartoon characters, moments from Korean daily life, magnificent palaces, all unique creations embellish the stream and attract hundreds of people every year. We could not believe in our eyes when we saw the detail of the structures which makes them look 'alive' and almost floating above the water!

Our personal favorite was Pucca, a Korean cartoon character, who was portrayed shouting at ninja Garu. Both were so cute, reminding us so much of the Korean culture that we love.

Besides, Pucca, the huge representations of the Korean palaces will certainly catch your attention. Regal and enormous, made us feel impatient about our visit to Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung palaces the next day (which by the way are not-to-be-missed in Seoul!).

From November 4th to November 20th and from 5 to 11 pm, do not miss this year's festival, whose theme is “Lightened Hangang River where history flows”. The Han River, meaning ‘large river’, is the lifeline of Seoul. It is a symbol of fertility and of good taste in arts.

Do not forget to write your wishes for next year on your wishing lantern and float it along the water!
