In today's Guest Post, Karlis from independentwolf.com mentions 5+1 reasons to visit Latvia, his beautiful home country! "If there is anything that Latvia is famous for among tourists, it is the vast diversity of things to see and enjoy. However, what makes it truly special is that Latvia can still be considered a hidden secret.

Following a travel guide might be easier in a country like Latvia. But it is definitely more important to try and understand what different aspects are to this place that blend together so perfectly. And then just go wherever you feel like going.

1. Great destination for all four seasons

From vast forests to beautiful sandy beaches, lakes and rivers, Latvia has it all. Natural and mostly untouched ecosystem makes up for about half of the territory of Latvia. This gives everyone a great chance to escape the cities and enjoy what nature gives us.

In this sense, the best time to visit would be the autumn months. When leaves are starting to change their color, Latvia turns into a magical, golden-colored wonderland. What is more, you can enjoy all four seasons to the fullest, which means it is a great travel destination throughout the year!

2. Endless forests and parks

The one thing that a lot of tourists recognize and point out immediately is the number of forests that Latvia has. And we are proud to be living as close to nature as possible.

Of course to truly enjoy it, one has to leave the capital city, Riga and go towards… well any direction actually, because there will be forests wherever you travel in Latvia.

Plus laws for wild camping are not as strict as in the UK for example. This means that it is easily possible for anyone to camp in truly beautiful and untouched places all around Latvia. Of course, you will have to be more careful when entering national parks.

3. Pure white sand in your feet

498 km of shoreline covered in pure white sand. Some particular places do have a bit rougher sand, but this is nothing when compared to the beautiful beaches you can find along the shore. The most famous beach probably is in Jurmala and it only takes about 15 minutes traveling by train from Riga center to reach it.

However, I would insist that you go off the usual tourist routes and enjoy a swim in a place where there is almost no-one around you. And no, it is not hard to find such places even in the middle of the summer.

4. All architectural styles in one place

Riga is most famous for its beautiful architecture and with the help of some locals you can probably find a building from any architectural style you can think of. This is why you should definitely visit the Old Town of Riga. The old narrow streets are the greatest place to go for a walk and enjoy the architecture, local food and culture.

And it isn't just Riga we are talking about here. Beautiful towns of different size, population, and overall looks are scattered all over Latvia. Each of them with a unique story on history, development and everyday life of people, who are enjoying their simple lives in culturally rich places.

While exploring Latvia, learning Latvian phrases can greatly enhance your journey. Engaging with locals in their mother tongue not only forges stronger bonds but also demonstrates reverence for their cultural roots. Latvian, a language steeped in history and distinctive phonetics, unveils insights into local customs, folklore, and the subtle allure ingrained in Latvian lifestyle.

5. Ideal for all adventure-seekers

What about those who enjoy some adventure and a bit more active experiences? Latvia has that covered.

You can enjoy human flight without attaching a parachute to your back at Aerodium. Enjoy summer in the middle of winter by visiting the enormous Līvu water park. Go for a walk on top of the trees or do bungee jumping from a cable car above one of Latvia’s biggest rivers.

And there is a lot more.

6. Escape the crowds and get off the beaten track

The one thing that a lot of travelers these days are trying to avoid is more tourists. And as we are still looking for those special places you can enjoy on your own, right there is Latvia with a population of roughly 1.8 million. Combine this with the vast territories of beautiful nature and, if you want, add some old Latvian traditions.

You could end up in a small, traditional sauna in the middle of nowhere, with a slight sound of waves hitting the shore somewhere near and a forest full of wildlife surrounding you from the other side.
